Saturday Morning Mural Painting

This a another version of the Tortilla Flat's Mural in Ventura. I had stable lighting (although it does shift) and was able to get a better finish that the earlier version. 16 x 20 " Oil/Canvas
This is the set up I used today. I rarely use an umbrella if I don't have direct light on me. I use a medium attached on the left side and don't use turpentine except with the ground wash. This location was close enough to ride my bike with everything tied to the basket on back.

School Bus Garage

I have another version of the location from a couple years ago on this blog. The mechanic was nice enough to lift the bus for me while he went to lunch. I hope to execute a few more from the interior in the near future.  16 x 20" Oil on Canvas

Figeroia Street Mural 1

The light changed 45 minutes into this painting, so I stopped.

Self Portrait In Hat

It was too windy to paint outside en plein air, so I attempted a self portrait.

Santa Paula Plane

This was an overcast day that ending with a sprinkle. James Martin painted with me after picking up our unsold paintings from the Art Of Agriculture Show.  16x20" oil/canvas

Ventura Lifeguard Stand

This is the second painting I did from the top of the parking structure. I am tempted to add some other elements to the composition, people, a water line, etc. but for now, I will leave it as it is. 16 x 20" Oil on Canvas board

Ventura Pier

Painted this section of the pier from the top of the parking structure near the Crown Plaza.
It was an overcast day with a breeze from the west.  16 x 20" oil on canvas board

Ventura Steeple

I have painted this building several times and it is very decorative. I try to simplify and design it to my tastes. In this case I have stretched it  and kept it sketchy. 16 x20"

Ventura Elks Lodge

Here's a larger version of the painting. It still needs a couple touches. 16 x 20"

Elks Lodge, Ventura

The best part of this painting isn't the painting, but the drop shadow from my VW. It cuts the painting diagonally and makes it look like it's part of the painting. I wish I could design these sort of elements in my paintings rather than have them thrown at me after I am finished.

Dock Reflections

Painted from a crappy dock with the sun at my back; I couldn't sketch this view fast enough.... It was a busy subject with very little going for it. So, what you see is what you get. 16 x20"

Boat and Forklift

What I like about the boatyards is that people are too busy working to be very interested in what I am up to. Things move around and the light changes fast. 16 x 20"

Vineyard Colours

I seem to have painted so many urban scapes that I have trouble getting into pure landscapes. It may be that they can be forgiving. Here's a quick 16 x 20" oil on canvas I did after a wine tasting with Karen.

Challenge Butter Trucks

Another location close to home that I have eyed for sometime as a possible painting.

NOAA On Drydock

This is a view of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's boat.

Oil on Oil

I enjoyed the location even though it was a 3 mile bike ride to the pumps.
I have decided to paint larger this year and search out local subjects.
